About me

“Proud of my basketball player career”

My name is Dejan Mladenovic. I began playing basketball in my hometown of Ada, for the former basketball club “Partizan Trikotaza” Ada-Mol, when I was around 11 years old. During that time, we achieved great results and surprised everybody around us, due to the fact that we were from the smallest town at the tournament. In the end, we won the “Serbian National Elementary Basketball School Competition”. With this title, we became the champions of the “School Olympics Games 2000” below the age of fourteen. Following that, I received many offers across the country. I decided to continue my education in a high school in Subotica and play for “Spartak” basketball club.

BOTH ON THE COURT AND THE BENCH

Serbian/Hungarian basketball internationalist Dejan Mladenovic was born on the 30 th of July 1985. in Ada, Vojvodina. Serbia. He has been living in Hungary for almost a decade now! In the 2011-2012 season, the club “Kormend” was his first superleague club in the Northern neighborhood. With them, he won third place and a bronze medal, in the final four of the Hungarian State Cup. Dejan then transfers to “FAKTUM” from Debrecen where he was consistently the starter in the first five. After that, he signs for “JKSE” from Jászberény a team which with him included, for the first time in history secures themselves an European “visa”-participation in the “FIBA EuroCup Challenge with the sponsorship from FIBA!

services

Before Hungary, Mladenovic played in the Slovakian team “KCERO” from Nitra, and after that in four teams in Romania- “CSU” Brasov, “CSM-OLCHIM” Raminku Valcea , “CSM” Iasi, and “ELBA” Temisvar, with which he entered the finals of the National Cup of Romania, playing against the inviolable “ASESOFT” from Ploiesti.

The first team of this 185cm tall basketball playmaker was “Spartak” in Subotica in which he played in all the categories, and in all of them earned the championship of Vojvodina!

For the “Blue Pigeons” from the furthest Northern town in Serbia, Dejo, Deja or Deki (as everybody calls him) played also as a senior, but played for OKK “Kikinda” and “Polet” from Novi Becej as well. To draw attention to himself from the youngest age of playing basketball, he first had to achieve remarkable results with a team of players under the age of 14. That is when he won the “Students Olympics” for the primary school students in Serbia. The primary school of Ada, the town in which he grew up and in which his parents still live today, achieved unbelievable results, as they became state champions in the year 2000. That is basically when everything started, the first basketball steps and first love towards this sport.

During the many year of his playing career, Mladenovic firmly defined his goals – What follows the end of the game? He decided – AFTER SPORT, SPORT AGAIN. Therefore, he simultaneously worked on his education. He earned a teacher’s degree of Faculty of Physical Education and Sports in Novi Sad, got a PhD and earned the calling “Teacher of PE and Sports”, as well as “Visoki je kosarkaski trener”. He owns a red “FIBA” license.

He didn’t wait long for an option of a new start in these callings. In the 2015-2016 school year, he has been employed as a PE teacher and coach of the school basketball team in the Serbian comprehensive secondary school “Nikola Tesla” in Budapest (along with that, he is also coach of the baskeball players of the Budaors “BDSE” team. He began working there in 2020 after working in the “Ujpest” team in Budapest). The “Ujpest Megyeri Tigrisek” team, also from Budapest is where he also had great success, leading the seniors to the second league of the Hungarian National championship. Due to the pandemic situation the championship was stopped, and at that moment his team was in second place, which automatically meant they were in the higher level of the competition.

services

Dejan got the chance to, after only six months of coaching experience, lead the cadets and juniors of “Rado Basket fusion Budaors” as the first strategist in the “Europe for the young” tournaments, youth basketball league “EYBL”. There, his team managed to out-play very known teams from Prague, London, Minhen, Helsinki,… He sees this as one of his big career accomplishments.

services

In his uprising basketball coach career, he believes his biggest accomplishments are the two golden medals (2017 and 2019) which he won on the Student Olympics of the secondary schools in Hungary on the final tournaments in Pecs, with the male team of the Serbian “Nikola Tesla” school, and a title for the best coach on the held competitions.

services

He is a participant in international basketball camps such as “Laslo Ratgeber academy” from Pecuj (the camp takes place in Baja, Hungary), “YUBAK FIBA” (Kopaonik, Serbia), promotes the “Roda” amp in Becej, Serbia. He is in the organization of the “Data Sport Agency” , as well as visitor of many well known seminars in the region and wider.

… He saw himself as a coach in the future, during his last first league season, playing for “Jazbereny”, when he took the place of the staff chief (who was ill at the time) and got the chance to lead the team – because he was the only one with a coach licence! Their opponents were the leaders on the board and multiple champions of Hungary – “PAKS ATOMEROMU”. Motivated by the unexpected situation and with little tactical corrections, “Jazbereny” managed to surprise the opponent and win the match with four points of advantage! Those were sensational news that the Hungarian sports’ portals talked about.

We ask him: How much does the work of a school basketball coach differ from one in a team? There is a difference in the categories and quality of the competitions, the work conditions, quantity of practices and dedication of the players, their dedication and sacrifice. There is also a difference in the prior knowledge the young basketball players come with, so there are examples where the coach has to lower the criteria and reprogram the practice because of the level of their tactical and technical knowledge. Either way, there are many things that need to be worked on, fixed, upgraded. The main vision (which is also the end goal) is to elevate the level of basketball in “Tesla’s” Serbian school in Budapest, so that we could one day be equal with the big basketball academies! Those ambitions need to be followed by a long term established plan, so that the idea could become a reality. That means we need to gather talented, determined children that are on the same level and create a positive competitive environment, for overall progress in all fields. They should have the idea of being able to become professional players one day as well, if possible. On the other hand, the coach needs to be maximally dedicated as well - no matter the age or category. No one was born with the knowledge, so the gaps and missing parts need to be worked on to make up for them. Those are usually the differences I have come across in the coaching process. We should mention that professional sports exists due to the mass amateur sports. By reproducing mass sports, and by selection we get to the elite small percentage of potential professionals, that is the main reason why we mustn’t make differences between amateur and professional sports. We should work with the same energy and dedication in all the levels and categories of the competition, and this is what shows us that it is the only correct way. I feel good working with young players and I always do my best to prepare for each practice, no matter if it’s individual work or team practice. I can see how they make progress each week with systematical work in all segments of the game and that brings me satisfaction for further work - said teacher Dejan Mladenović

Interview Varos television and newspaper, Budapest, January 2021

Forming of the complete personality during the many years of working in the sports world

......

“The most important guarantee of anyone working in the sports field is - living a healthy lifestyle and taking care of your health! People of this kind have a big chance of becoming great individuals. By that I mean that they, through sport develop social skills, responsibility, solidarity, humanity, awareness of personal education. With all of that combined, they form themselves fully as individuals far faster than their peers. Practice and competition is their biggest support in that process. The hard labour and work they put into what they do prepares them not to let the bitter feeling of losing humiliate them, but also not to get carried away with the sweet feeling of victory. With wins and losses they are best taught to control their positive and negative emotions. Engaging in sports makes people learn certain skills which makes them more successful than the rest, which makes great impact on their self esteem which is of great significance especially in their teenage and adolescent years. Good habits and work ethic are acquired, you get the knowledge of how to properly behave in a collective, group and community. Due to that they become better and more capable people, and they will be prepared to face their obstacles and problems later in life. There are many other positive effect that are an advantage and benefit for later in life, in whichever field they end up finding themselves! The more successful and talented ones should for sure be guided and specialized for sports so that they could achieve their maximum, but nonetheless everyone is in a win-win situation at the end of the day, no matter how far they go in the world of sport” said Dejan Mladenovic, physical education and sports teacher - basketball coach.

Coach Dejan has countless hours of experience in correcting simple errors in a player’s shot. Now you have an opportunity to learn how to make and get the best shooting form.

Very important in our session programs and packages is: how to get best workout routine, work ethic, discipline and winner mentality.

Following the examples and ideals of the greatest and one-in-a-lifetime players, such as Drazen Petrovic: “A practice has to be painful, so that you can enjoy the game”.

1. IN THE EARLY DAWN

“People talked about his morning practices, they still do. He practiced alone before school, around 7 in the morning. Mostly due to the fact that his father, a strict and steady man, was against the idea of him missing school because of basketball… I strongly believe, that he would be 30% better player today, if he had a private coach for individual performances to guide him, especially at such young age, when children simply absorb knowledge. If only he had channeled all those hours of self workout the right way.”

2. IN THE EARLY DAWN 2

“He I would wake up at five, six in the morning, before school, and go to the gym. Just me and the cleaning lady. She would take care of the gym and I would take care of the baskets. Hundreds of scores, thousands and thousands of scores. Every day before school. And dribbling too. I would place the chairs and dribble. And enjoy. Every day.”

3. SEVEN HUNDRED SCORES A DAY

“There were times, when I would do 600 or 700 scores a day. Compared to others, who would hardly score 200, at best.”

4. AN ENTHUSIAST? AN ADDICT?

An enthusiast, definitely. Drazen worked 8 or 9 hours a day. Not a day passed that he skipped training. He would feel guilty if he skipped training, even accidentally. He couldn’t bare it, until the following day, when he could fix it. And he did, by doubling the training. In his whole career, he skipped 10 preplanned trainings, at most. These are the reasons for implementing morning trainings, it is a way for us to become more persistent, better and stronger. These morning trainings earned the calling “Basketball for breakfast”

“Come work hard with me, and belive I can rise you to the high level!”

Message For Parents

- Why do you pay for your child to play sports?

One parent asks another : “Why do you spend so much of your money and time on the individual and group practices as well as the competitions your child takes part in?!”

The other parent answers : “ I have to confess, I don’t do that so that my child would become an exceptional sportsman, that isn’t my goal.”

The first parent is confused and asks: “So why do you do it then, if that isn’t your goal?”

The other one answers : “ I spend the money for the moments in which my child is persistent, and the moments in which he wants to give up, but never does. I spend my money so my child can make lifelong friendships, so that he can learn the best sports techniques on the highest levels, from the best coaches. That way he can always aim for the highest goals, no matter how far he gets. Along the way, he will learn many valuable life lessons. Through discipline and social interactions he will become a person who can set a good example for others, help others and show respect to his teammates, as well as gain their respect. I spend my money to teach my child to live with the disappointment he may feel when he doesn’t win the game. For him to learn that the things he’s practiced and repeated many times can still go wrong, and that he needs to keep his head up in those moments and move forward.

I spend money so that he could learn how to reach his goals, be guided in a positive way by a good coach and teacher, who will with his behavior and manners show him the best example, and in a selfless way pass on his knowledge and experience. The coach will dedicatedly work with him and teach him how to learn new techniques quickly, and how to use those in the most effective way. He will realize that success can’t be achieved overnight, but that it is a product of patience and hard work.

I also spend my money so that he could spend his time in a sports hall, instead of being on the street with questionable, unfulfilled people that are wasting their time.

I could keep talking about this, but to make a long story short, I don’t spend money on the training, just so that he could practice; I am paying for the opportunities that sport brings him, and that is a wide spectrum of positive mental and physical aspects, which are crucial for developing a good character. He will grow and develop as a person and benefit from that through his whole life and further education. Because of that, whatever path he chooses later in life, he will be resourceful, successful and cooperative in as a collective and functional human being. He will be taught to help others and respect his individuality, skill and be memorable and prominent as a result of his work. However, he will at the same time respect other’s versatility and understand how much work is put into it. I honestly believe that I am not spending my money, but investing it into what’s the most valuable to me, and that is my child!”

“I was telling my son as well as my friend’s son, two years ago when we were on summer vacation, “You guys love basketball?” I asked. “How long has it been since you were on a court?” “20 days,” they answered.

“I’m not so sure that you love basketball, believe me when I tell you, I used to sleep with the ball.”

Željko Obradović

“You have to think about basketball from dusk till dawn. You have to think about it as soon as you wake up, and work on your moves, technique and tactics that you were taught by your coach daily. That is how you’ll really take those elements in and learn to use them in a given necessary situation. Commitment and persistence need to be on a high level. There is no successful, big player that became successful only by practicing with the team. Individual upgrading and improvement are necessary for learning skills which will make you better, different and more noticeable than others. Only saying that you love basketball isn’t enough, you have to keep proving that it is true, with endless dedication, sacrifice and hard work. That is when you can expect to get the “reciprocated love” in return. That is when basketball will give back to you just as much as you gave to it. What’s interesting, is that this applies to all the other spheres of life which we meet with daily, and sport is an amazing opportunity to learn about it in the best and healthiest way”.

Dejan red shirt portrait photo

“Players aren’t actually “made” by big coaches of senior teams. They “just” polish them, giving them the necessary opportunity. Players are made by all those “small” coaches that aren’t as heard of or talked about, or the ones you’ve never even heard of. They are actually the ones that work with the child from an early age, and teach them elementary technical elements, as a foundation which is necessary for doing sports successfully. They pass on the passion, moments and love for sports, which later make the children strong in the hardest moments, and enables them to face the biggest obstacles in front of them. Spartan dedication, devotion towards practice and healthy habits which forms them a strong character in combination with education and developed intelligence, successfully forming them into complete individuals.”
